S.H.I.P. Aid makes another delivery of humanitarian aid to Lesotho!

On May 25, 2007, volunteer members of  S.H.I.P. Aid gathered to load a 40 foot cargo container with over 30,000 pounds of donated medical supplies, school books, clothing, and toys.  View pictures from the container loading. The Harker School Football Team lent their help in honor of Deron Thorp.  Deron was a Founding Director of S.H.I.P. Aid and was also an assistant coach for the Harker football team.  Deron unexpectedly passed away on November 4, 2006.

The 40-foot container of humanitarian aid was delivered to the Kingdom of Lesotho in Southern Africa in July of 2007.  S.H.I.P. Aid volunteers met the shipment and with the help of the Sisters of the Holy Names in Lesotho, the donations were distributed to selected schools, hospitals, orphanages, and Peace Corps work sites.  View pictures from the distribution in Lesotho.

S.H.I.P. Aid - Mission:
S.H.I.P. Aid (Shipping Humanitarian Aid to Impoverished People) is a grassroots, community-based 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that provides assistance to poverty-stricken members of the international community.  Leveraging the goodwill of the people within the United States, S.H.I.P. Aid enables our local community to work together to improve and strengthen the lives of people living in poverty-stricken communities throughout the world.  S.H.I.P. Aid aims to promote awareness around issues that plague humanity while working to improve the quality of life for those in need by focusing on two critical areas: education and healthcare.

Goals:

  • Facilitate the collection of excess goods
  • Establish and maintain an effective process to ship goods from the United States to international locations
  • Identify communities and organizations in need of donated items and establish programs to enable self-improvement
  • Focus on providing assistance specifically to women and children affected by HIV/AIDS

S.H.I.P. Aid Objectives:
The United States has an enormous amount of goods that are wasted on a daily basis.  Although people are very charitable and want to assist communities in need, they often find that there is not a suitable charity that will accept and distribute their goods to communities in need. Basic items that are thrown away or taken for granted -- such as clothing, food, antibiotics, bandages, and books-- are considered luxuries by many living in difficult circumstances in developing countries. People around the world are in desperate need of everyday items that are often thrown away in the United States.  S.H.I.P. Aid aims to address these needs through a variety of means, including the procuring and delivering of basic goods to impoverished people in rural Africa.  S.H.I.P. Aid intends to “adopt” rural communities and villages, and help the people of these communities to begin climbing the ladder out of poverty.  Additionally, we intend to provide programs that will encourage the members of our adopted communities to work towards a common goal of community enhancement.  The primary goal of our programs will be to provide suitable conditions and opportunity for the youth to receive a quality education.
